38 seconds
2004-11-28

38 seconds can change a life; it can save a life or destroy one.

Ring, Ring. Ring, Ring. Click. She sighed and looked at the phone timer. 38 seconds until the answering machine picked up. Why wouldn't he answer? Ring, Ring, Ring.. Click. Another 38 seconds and still no sign. 38 seconds can make or break a life, 38 seconds could tell her if he was alive or dead. 38 seconds could save him.. if only he would answer. 7 rings each time. She called again, no answer. She looked quietly in the mirror.

There was fear and confusion in those green-grey eyes. A tear trickled down her cheek. What was happening to her love? Why would he not answer? And why was there such a sense of dread within her heart?

Her fear slowly grew, dispersing throughout her veins. "Venom," she muttered, "I must get the poison out.." Her hands went automatically to the dresser drawer, searching for her cure. The razor shone in her right hand as the sharpness drew out the poison, the deep red venom.

She picked up the phone. Ring. Ring. Ring. Click. A sigh and she sat numbly on the edge of her bed.

Ring. Ring. This time it was her phone ringing. Ring. Her fingers fumbled on the Talk button. Ring. Click.

What if it had been him? The redial button was blurry and red. Just then the phone rang again.

Ring. Ring.

The phone fell off the bed and hit the floor.

Ring. Ring. Ring. Click.

38 seconds and no answer.
